Film Noir Photography Blog- (Possible Proposal)

• These are the two that will be shot in the studio in collage, the props i'm going to use are just a trench coat/ or some kind of jacket that might resemble the one worn by the actor in the pictures below, I will take the pictures for outside in the second week, due to the fact we had a week off (which would have been week 1, I am going to have to shoot both my inside and my outside shots in the same week (week 2).

Film Noir Picture

1. I think that this photograph was taken around the 1940s because it is displayed black and white.

2. The message that the photograph could have been conveying is that the actor is lonely.

3. This image is easy to create to because there’s only the man’s chin and him holding a glass on a table (under a spot light and on a table)

1. I think this image was also created around the 1940s again because of the grey style (black and white) look.

2. The image would be easy to create because there’s only one person, I can easily re-create the expression on the man’s face, I may be able to re-create the background, I don’t know if I can re-create the clothes though.

2. It is easy to re-create because the man is holding a pen to his mouth and not a cigar, which is lucky for me because I don’t like smoking and I am not old enough to buy one anyway.

1. I think that this picture may have been taken around the 2000s because although it looks old, the clothing that the man is wearing look quite modern (in my opinion)

2. However, I think that this image may be good to re-create because there’s only one person, and I could create a filter to place in front of the camera.

1) I think this image was taken around the 1950s because of the old fashioned clock, the look of the lady in the background and the fact it is displayed in black and white.

2) Also it would be easy to create because I can be the person reflected in the clock, I could still get the time of the clock (within the nearest 5 minutes) and I could use the settings on the camera to make the image black and white.

3) I will be taking this shot at home, with the sealing lights (which are soft lights) as lighting, I will be using one of the clocks I have at home and hopefully it will be reflective enough to show my face.

Film Noir Game Disk Cover

The poster below "L.A. Noire" was going to be a poster that I could try to  re-create.

The screenshot from Minecraft was something I could have used to make a background in my poster

Film Noir Photography Proposal.

Shoot 1)

My first shoot might be shot in a room (or studio) inside collage, for props I’d find a toy pistol, a hat (preferably as similar as I can get to the hat worn by the man in the picture), I’d make sure there is low light, I’d have to Photoshop the shadow of the bird/ crow onto the shoulder of the man, I could make something to only let light shine through so it only shone on the man’s face, the angle I’d shoot the actor at would be approximately 45^°,the light level here would be low, there won’t be a fill light because I need the shadows as part of my shoot

The writing would have to change to something different, like the title of the film/game, the year it was made, the producer’s name and any other names that appear at the bottom of posters or on video game covers.

Maybe the ISO would be around 200 (2 ⁄ 10ths) of a second.

Also if the actor is carrying a fake gun, there may have to be sines everywhere stating that there is a photo shoot in progress.

Seen as I am inside for this shot, I won’t have to worry about being disturbed by people.

The shot that I'll try and re-create is the one below.

Shoot 2)

For this shoot (the one below) I will use a room (or studio) in collage, this time I’d have a high light level because then you can see the man’s face rather than struggling, also this my prevent the possibility of blur, for props; all I need is the right clothes and a toy hand-gun (or pistol), also as before, maybe the ISO would be around 400 (4⁄10ths) of a second , as far as Photoshop is concerned, hopefully there won't be much I have to do, apart from rotate the picture of the man a little so that it's like the poster below, the writing would have to change to something different, like the title of the film/game, the year it was made, the producer’s name and any other names that appear at the bottom of posters or on video game covers, I would have to be facing the actor (directly in front of him/her) and would have to make sure that the actor was holding the same or at least nearly the same pose as the one in the poster below.

Shoot 3)

Here I could shoot this outside (possibly) in a light area, maybe foggy or cloudy (if I can), obviously I’d have to make sure that there aren’t any people around for the shot, I’d have to make sure that no one trips over the tri-pod, I’d have to make sure I had permission to take the shot where I would be taking the shot.

Maybe the ISO would be around 400 (4⁄10ths) of a second, I would need to make sure that the camera was in focus and that it wasn’t grainy or blurred, the writing would have to change to something different, like the title of the film/game, the year it was made, the producer’s name and any other names that appear at the bottom of posters or on video game covers, I would have to be facing the actor (directly behind him/her) and would have to make sure that the actor was holding the same or at least nearly the same pose as the one in the poster below.

Shoot 4)

Here I could take this picture outside with the actor standing or hiding behind a wall, I could colour the background back in Photoshop, and the props I would need to bring would be a toy gun and the clothes that he/she will be wearing, as it is outside I would need to take into consideration other people’s needs, for example making sure that I am not obstructing a path what people are walking down, make sure no one trips over the tri-pod, I’d have to make sure that I have permission to take pictures in the specific area that I am taking the picture in.

The ISO could be around 200 (2⁄10ths) of a second and also I would need to make sure that the camera was in focus and that it wasn’t grainy or blurred, although I could have the background a little blurred (it's only a possibility), the writing would have to change to something different, like the title of the film/game, the year it was made, the producer’s name and any other names that appear at the bottom of posters or on video game covers.

1) IOS - increasing this causes grain
Aperture- Low light levels cause the auto large setting
Shutter Speed - low light causes slow shutter speed, this can cause blur.

Health and safety concerns - AVOID ACCIDENTS
5) Don't touch light/ barn doors because they're hot!
Be careful of trailing wires and tripods.
Look after your equipment make sure it doesn't get stolen and make sure you are polite to the public.

Generic Conventions Of Film Noir: This gun for hire.

This gun for hire

Today we watched the first 5 minuets of a film from 1942 called "This Gun For Hire", 

In the opening scene to the film had a alarm clock sounding and the main actor/ character waking up, I think that the sound of the clock is non-diagetic as it was a sound you could see (you could clearly see where the sound was coming from), also in the opening few moments of the film, the man smacked the woman (seemed like a cleaner or something like that) because she tried to remove the man's cat from the room and he wouldn't allow it.

One shot that I noticed was one where the actor looked at the camera as if it was a mirror (conveying the message that there should be a mirror in the place of the camera).

Also in the opening scene there was a piano playing in the background, as you could not see who was playing it or where the piano was in the first place, it leads me to think that the sound was diagetic.

A few minuets later I noticed that, in a kitchen there was a kettle whistling, this was a non-diagetic sound.

Below are pictures of an A3 piece of paper that has been folded in half, on one side are all the Generic conventions of Film Noir and on the other side are all the non-generic conventions of film Noir.

Below is the other side of the A3, this time it was all the non-diagetic conventions of film noir.
