Final Assignment Evaluation

·        Introduction to your assignment - explain the genre Film Noir, history, time period, clothing etc.)
The genre that we were set was Film Noir, this genre is basically that which generalizes all films that are black and white and made from around the 1890’s, also Film Noir Films were being made and were mainly based around the American Prohibition (a large scale ban on any form of alcohol and it’s consumption), causing a large amount of gang crime and “Bootlegging” to take place, Stereotypically in these films there would be:
·         A Damsel (usually in distress)
·         A Villain (usually evil)
·         A Hero (usually saves the damsel from the villain and creates a “happy ending”)

·        Your research – what images inspired your poster/DVD shots and why?

The ones I found on the internet were the ones I used to create the CD cover and poster, the first one was a film named “Film Noir”, the poster had a man walking away from the camera, with his shadow trailing behind it (it seems to have been edited on Photoshop), the next poster is one advertising “Perfect Sleep”, a Film Noir Film, the man on the cover is kneeling down pointing a gun towards (what would appear to be the ground), the third Poster that I found whilst on the net was one advertising “This Gun For Hire”, another Film Noir Film produced in 1942, similar to the other two films, the actor has a pistol in his hand and is wearing a trench coat and a hat (both fitting with the Film Noir theme/genre), every one of the films displayed their films in different ways so you could identify the films and their individuality.
·        Characteristics of film noir photography lighting – (detail the three-light technique)
The lighting in these films would usually be quite low, but they may use lighting like overhead lights (ones usually placed on the sealing in buildings) possibly a fill light, but again they would try to make the lighting levels quite low to create atmosphere.
·        What were your ideas? Detail your four photo-shoots at home and at college.
I remember have some friends take some shots of me wearing my suit and hat (as the inspector in a Film Noir Film) but apart from that I don’t remember taking any other shots outside of collage (at home).
·        Photography. What did you have to take into account, i.e.: location, times, props, models and equipment?
I took into account the locations I was limited to, the only limitation I had with the camera was the fact I didn’t fully understand how to operate the camera fully.
·        Contact sheet examples for all your test shots detailing the camera settings used
(One sheet x10 images per shoot).
I made a contact sheet for the images I took whilst in the studio (the ones I am dressed in my suit), each picture; I took a different pose, the first one was where I was kneeling down, pointing my fingers (made out to be a fake pistol) at the ground, the next few shots were ones of me (from the chest up), making different poses; some of the pictures had me with my head tipped at a slight angle so you couldn’t actually see my face very well.
·        Editing processes/techniques used (include screen shots)
I defiantly used the “Un-saturate Tool” to make all of my images Black and White, I also used the magic wand tool and the rubber tool, I mainly had to use the rubber tool to get rid of some of the lines when I was attempting to separate the pictures on my contact sheet so I could choose which ones were my favorite.
·        Examples of your four final photographs (one from each shoot)
The first of my favorite shots is one where I am standing up, only the top half of my body is in this picture, (I think this type of shot is a cut-away), with my head slightly bowed- I like this shot because; although you can see the actor’s face, if you don’t know who they are- you could still be wondering who the person is.
The second of my favorite pictures is on with pretty much all of my body in the shot, this time I am kneeling down, pointing a pretend gun at the ground, I like this because again- if you don’t know who they are- you could still be wondering who the person is because of the fact the face is only partially shown.
My third favorite picture is one where I am standing up, this time I am … I Like this photo over the other photos that I took because…

What is a Primary source?
Using your own words/ making your own thing.
Example: This is research that you made, for example; make a surveys focused on different people, or notes that you make, proposals anything you have made.
Research that is THE original, what you made, you know exactly where it came from. 


What are Qualitative results?
Things that can't be put into graphs.
Example: People's opinions, views, comments, quotes, views on the quality of things etc.
You can use people's opinions as quotes to show that a service is good or bad.
Identifying individual people is a lot easier this way, as no two answers can really be the same. 

What are Quantative results?
Information that could be made numerical.
Example: Surveys that only have Yes or No questions, which can be easily put into
graphs, tables, Bar Charts.

Finding out what your target audience wants.

BBFC
British Board of Film Classification.
It is a non-governmental company, it is independent company, the guild lines are VERY strict since 1912 (103 years), they started classifying videos since 1984 when the Video Classification Act passed.
They give an age rating on films.
PG, U, 12, 12A, 15, 16, 18.
PG= Parental Guidance.
U= Universal
A bug’s life has an age rating of Universal, if it’s a Universal; the age rating is 4 and above.
Very mild language, for example; “damn and hell”.
Very, very mild violence.
No antisocial behavior or sexual behavior.
PG: Parental Guidance
It’s the parent’s fault what the child learns from the film.
Mild language for example “S*** and Son of a B****”.
Very mild sexual behavior, you wouldn’t really notice.
Mild violence.

Strong language for example “f***ing”.
Moderate violence.
Minor antisocial behavior.
Some but very mild gore.

The reason why this film has an age rating of 15 is because:
  • There are "270" uses of the word "f***" in this film, with 13 uses of the words "Motherf***er"
  • There are strong sex references
  • There is soft drug use
  • This film also contains violence

The reason why this film is rated 15 is because:
  • The film contains strong forms of swearing ( for example "motherf***er" and "f**k" which is claimed to have been used 270 times)
  • The film contains strong sex references
  • The film contains soft drug use
  • The film also contains acts of violence

An Education
"When classifying the film the key issues discussed by examiners were sex/sex references, theme, smoking, discrimination and language. An Education was rated PG-13 in America for ‘mature thematic material involving sexual content, and for smoking’." 
Therefore, the reasons why the film is classified as 12A  is because:
  • There were mild sex references
  • There is smoking involved
  • Forms of discrimination
  • Mild language
